38 Weeks, 6 Days — Bump Progression

How can it already be October 7th??

I've only had 2 kids for 11 days, I've had extra help (Nana, Monte-D, Gramma & Chief (last weekend), and Jill & Chris (this weekend). How am I going to make it when everyone goes home?!
I will do my best to keep up blog posts, even though they have been lacking in the past few months anyway...

Here is the last pregnancy progression picture. I didn't quite make it to 39 weeks...38 weeks, 6 days and he was ready to be born!

I will post another, like I did with Connor when he was 4 weeks old. Let's see how much weight I can lose in these first 4 weeks. So far I am down to 153... I'm hoping to get to 130...a little less than before I got pregnant. We shall see.

35 Weeks — Bump Progression

Here we are again....another month has passed. I'm still pregnant. The heat is really starting to get to me and I am just going to have to get over whatever our electric bill is going to be. I waddle more than I walk and a minor, tolerable heartburn is ever-present.

I am still very thankful to be pregnant, but I am NOT one of those women that "loves" being pregnant. It is a means to an end....hopefully a perfectly healthy little baby boy. So I'll suck it up...for him. But I see no reason why I should do this again....at least not anytime soon, that is for sure!

Although I was by no means "skinny" I look back at my 15 week picture and envy the size of my arms, my not-so-huge legs and the fact that I know for a fact I had no pelvic pain at that point and could even sleep on my stomach a little longer...and definitely my back. Those days are long gone.

Only one more picture in the series. I've got less than 4 weeks until little Declan will be born. I can and will survive. Now that his room is finished (almost), and Brian is back home from training in California (hallelujah) I am ready for him to come any time. Well, that is not completely the truth, but you know what I mean. :)

I think I'll go take a Tums.

31 Weeks — Bump Progression

Round 1 with Connor.

I am currently in Georgia, but I managed to take my monthly photo today and Photoshopped the background so it matches. :) I did NOT retouch my size at all...I'm freakin' huge with 2 more pictures in the series to go (oh my goodness...)

We got to visit with our dear friend, Johnny today. In the kindest way possible, he let me know he thought I had about 2 weeks to go...not nine. Oh boy.

I have good days and bad. Today has been good. Declan likes to hang out on my right side, just like his big brother did at this time 4 years ago. He is still hanging out very low and the pelvic pain is especially bad during these moments, but I think I've managed to keep the limp and waddle to a minimum.

I'm not sure if it is because I'm in Georgia or if it will continue once I get home, but my internal thermometer has gone up in the past few days. My mom touched my arm the other day and said I was radiating heat. I guess that is just part of being very pregnant in the summer.

Overall, things are still very good. I am getting several bouts of heartburn (like right now) but it is tolerable.

Connor and I are certainly missing Brian, but enjoying our time with family in Georgia. I will be adding pictures from my annual Girl's Weekend that took place this time last week shortly (just got them off the camera, too). My friends are truly the greatest and surprised me and little D with a baby shower. They each made Declan a custom, handmade, onesie and gave us a gift card for essentials.

27 Weeks — Bump Progression & 9 Year Anniversary

Happy 9-Year Anniversary to us!

We haven't done anything special today...Brian went golfing with a friend and I printed and shipped 4 stationary orders... very romantic, I know.

It is also that time of month again...time to chart me getting very large.

So, I have about 12 weeks left. I guess my belly is getting big enough that my shirt is appearing shorter. I still managed to huff it up the Sleeping Bear Dunes last week!

Declan's room is really coming together. It hasn't been painted yet, but all of the furniture is assembled and in its place. I will have to take and post some pictures soon...when it is all done.

And as usual, here is a link to the same progression point with Connor...

——my mom saw this series and said, "I can't believe you have 3 more pictures in the series!" At first I thought she was wrong, but she is absolutely right and I can't believe it either...holy cow I'm pretty sure I'm going to be way bigger than I was with Connor....——

Next doctor's appointment on Tuesday...then every 2 weeks.

Cravings: none really...haven't been overly hungry at all actually. Believe it or not I do NOT want ice cream. The last few times we've treated ourselves, I end up getting a "glacier" which is like a Mr. Misty (DQ) with soft serve ice cream inside. I've had lime and orange...like a dreamsicle.

We are having a heat wave...it has been either 100º or over the past couple of days. I thought I lived in Michigan to avoid this crap?! I'm not swelling [yet], and I've done this before, so it is tolerable. At least this time I have a lake I can jump into or lounge in, so that makes it much better!

Connor's 43+lbs is getting really tough to carry around. Obviously he walks, but when he is really tired or just needs some mom-time, he likes to be carried. He knows he has to get "above the baby", but I can't carry him for very long anymore at all. I guess this is a good transition since after D gets here, I won't be able to carry him at all for a while because of the C-section.

Connor puts his head on my belly and says he can "hear Declan kicking". Then he wonders why I can't hear it... :)

I have no clue how much I weigh. I should probably step on the scale, but I've been so busy I haven't even thought about it. I think I weigh about the same as I did with Connor...I'd guess around 155 or 156....but I could be way off. Granny just left early this morning (7-6-12) and claims that I got significantly bigger just while she was here! :)

Declan Trotter Nealon

We are committed.
It is a "D" name & Irish....two things that although not completely necessary, I wanted.

Now we are ABCD! (We didn't realize that we became ABC until the Connor's first Christmas when I was "signing" Christmas gift tags.

Declan

MEANING: From dag ”"good”" and lan ”"full”" suggesting “”full of goodness.”" St. Declan was the founder of a monastery at Ardmore in County Waterford and may have preached in Ireland before the arrival of St. Patrick. Many miracles are attributed to a rock on the beach at Ardmore known as St. Declan’s Stone. According to legend, on a trip back from Wales one of his disciples, Runanus, forgot Declan’s sacred bell. But a prayer from Declan and, miraculously, the stone carried the bell over the waves back to Waterford.

GENDER: Boy | Male

IRISH NAME: Declan Deaglan

PRONUNCIATION: “deck + lan”

So, his whole name technically means "Full of Goodness", "Messenger", "Descendant of Neal". We aren't overly concerned with name meanings ("Connor" is also Irish and means "lover of hounds"...) but I do hope our newest little guy is full of goodness as his name suggests. :)

Can't wait to meet our little Declan. I swear he has been laying horizontal right on top of my pubic bone for most of the day. I think I can feel his whole back as he attemps to sprawl out...getting to be a tight squeeze in there, buddy!

Here is a picture of the mobile I ordered for above his crib. I LOVE it. It is 1920's vintage American planes. It is wind powered so will only move if the fan is on or windows open. Doesn't make noise, but absolutely adorable!

——

Connor and I went to Tunnel Park to the beach today in Holland with Jill, her mom, Lucy & Ellie. The kids had a blast even though the water was less than 66º (ie FREEZING). Connor dove in like it was bath water..just like he did when he was 11 months old in Traverse City. He and Ellie (4) have become great buddies. I'll add pictures soon. I want to go back with Brian. He could have come, but I think he also enjoyed his day to himself.

I absolutely crashed at about 7:30. I'm afraid I'm getting back to the point of needed a nap...and I'm only 24 weeks along. I know the sun can be draining, but thankfully it was pretty overcast today and yet I'm still wiped!

Baby Name Drama...

Yesterday was rough.

My facebook status after about 1:00 yesterday afternoon was (and still is) that I am "A bit of a hormonal wreck today."

I really wasn't "fishing" for comments or support as Brian would say. Just being honest. And I honestly wanted my neighbors to read it. Whether they posted anything or not, I guarantee they know what it was about and I wanted them to know I was pretty torn up about it.

So, a brief explanation is probably summed up best with the email I wrote my best friends back home after several of them were concerned about me. Here it is:

Girls,

Sorry to worry you guys with my facebook status (if you read it...) I've had a hormonally charged, rough day....

For a LONG time, the name for our little guy has been between "Declan" and "Logan". For the past 5 weeks, Connor has been very insistent on "Declan". He has even gone so far as to say that he will be "mad" if we name him Logan and that "Logan is mean." He hasn't backed down or changed his tune at all...I bought letters for his room, etc. We have a name.

Well, today has not been so fun.

We have neighbors that live about 4 doors down (opposite side of the street). No one was aware of their journey to have a child. No one knew she can't have children, no one knew they were going to adopt. Well, we got an email this morning from another neighbor telling us that things moved faster than they thought and they are driving home with their newly adopted baby boy TODAY from Iowa. They have nothing. The email was to "rally the troops" so-to-speak to let them borrow stuff until we have a shower for them or they get it for themselves. I messaged to ask what the name is...thinking I would get balloons or make a sign, etc.

Several hours later she wrote back.

Declan Ernest Emmick

Crushed.

The VAST majority of the hood knows that that is our name...or at least that it was between Declan and Logan. I do not know if she knew or not. I'm hoping that she did not know. I feel like it has been stolen from me. Regardless, there is a bit of sadness now. If we change it (which I don't think we will) then there is the feeling of being forced to change and I never want to regret or question the name that we chose for our baby boy. I would hate to have to tell him when he's six, "yeah, your name was going to be Declan, but the dopes down the street stole it 15 weeks before you were born." Then if we don't change it, he has to share a bit of his identity/name from the very start...with someone his age that lives right down the street. I realize that the name is becoming more and more common, but most people that I've talked to up here have never heard it before I mentioned it or they say, "is that the name of the guy on Revenge?" No one actually knows anyone with that name. (I heard it in February and it is the name of one of the main characters in Leap Year.)

I also don't want them to be mad if we don't back down. I'm sorry, but this kid has been growing in my belly for a while now and that is how I've thought of him...we'll just have 2. Whether I like it or not, it takes away from their kid as well. And then there is the question of telling them. What is an appropriate way of saying, "listen that is our name and we aren't changing it, so I hope you are okay with having 2 of them after September!" She's never been pregnant, I can imagine that she will think that changing ours is not a big deal....that isn't how it works.

Most people I have talked to have the same response...don't change it. And we most likely will not. We probably won't even live here in 5 years, and that will be his name for the rest of his life. But regardless, today has been hard. Many tears have been shed.

I am also very upset that I went from being so excited for them & their new little family, and even a potential playmate for our little guy to being irritated and mad. I'm hoping I can be happy for them soon, but right now I am feeling robbed. I am thankful that most people know that we had the name first....at least for now we will not appear to be the thieves.

Anyway, just a rough day. Of all the fricken names in the word, they had to pick Declan....

I don't know what my advice is...make it public on Facebook so everyone knows you are committed...perhaps even a sign for the yard.... Or never tell anyone the name until he/she is born. I don't know if I'll ever know if they outright stole it from us.......

At the end of the day, I'm trying to keep some perspective. We've waited so long for this precious little boy, and I am so thankful that he appears to be healthy and growing in my belly right now. :) Hopefully I'll be better tomorrow. I guess you'll need to stand by on the name....what was pretty set in stone is suddenly not so certain to me now.... :(

Love you guys. Sorry to worry you.

So, there it is. By the end of last night I was very tired, eyes swollen (from crying and it felt like some sort of chemical reaction from some sun screen....great combination...) and quite snappy at Brian and Connor too. I needed to go to bed. When I woke up this morning, I knew that it was still a reality and I know that there is only about a 1/2% chance that anything will be different today or in the future. I am trying to decide if I am going to go to the baby shower that is being held for them next week. I will provide a gift regardless, but Brian's parents will be at our house that weekend and I'm honestly not sure I'm ready to meet their little Declan. Oh, and my brother had a great idea....start calling him "Dee" (his initials) from the start. I'm not sure they would be too keen on that, but I got a kick out of it for sure. Christian, thank you for being devastated for us. I'm also kinda waiting to see if someone else in the hood is going to tell them that they took our name.... there has been essentially no response to her announcement of his name (via our neighborhood community) and I know it is because everyone is uncomfortable... not the most fun situation in the world, that is for sure. Oh well. Drama.

23 Weeks — Bump Progression

So, I waited too late in the day to take the picture and the lighting is very different from the previous ones. I'm also bigger at night, so I may do a redo picture tomorrow. I don't think a couple of hours is going to make much of a difference. Besides, I won't look like I've been up since 3:00 am with wind blown hair, essentially no makeup and not the best expression on my face!

Oh well...here I am with the little man...
I definitely think there was a bigger difference between 15 and 19, but if I kept up that growth rate, by the time September rolls around I wouldn't be able to get out of my house!

Current weight: 151.5 lbs.

No cravings, no real aversions.

I wake up in the middle of the night. I'm not sure how much of it is pregnancy related and how much of it has to do with the fact that I'm in Connor's bed. I don't mean to fall asleep after I read him a story, but it has happened 2 of the last 3 nights.

I started buying nursery stuff this week. SO FUN and the blackout curtains from Pottery Barn Kids came today. I still have to raise the curtain rod, but I just love the pattern and preppy look. I'm going to have to back off the "vintage" idea that I was hoping to use because the fabric is just too crisp and clean to pull of vintage. But that is okay...now I can get an inexpensive white crib that I like!

I'll likely post a few sneak peek pictures of the nursery, but nothing that will give the whole room away until it all comes together...probably late July or August!

HERE is the link to the same picture in my pregnancy with Connor.

The picture above is updated...taken at 23 weeks, 1 day and not at night. This was the original.

Seeing HIM.....a little honesty, too.

We could not have asked for our ultrasound and follow-up appointment to have gone any better yesterday morning.
Within moments of placing the wand on my belly, the ultrasound technician spun the screen around and it became quite clear that we are having a baby BOY! Talk about a "money" shot right off the bat!

She then proceeded to do all her checks and measurements for the next 45 minutes. I drank fully caffeinated coffee yesterday morning hoping that he would move around for her (unlike his big brother at his 20 week ultrasound!). It worked great and he checked out wonderfully. Then it was time for the "fun" shots and he pretty much refused to give us a good profile picture. We have an amazing one of Connor that shows his little nose just as it is today. Maybe next time. We do have a couple of 3D pictures that we did not have with Connor. Of course we think he is adorable, but honestly a little alien-like still, too.

Following that appointment, I had my normal appt. with Dr. Lown. We had to wait a while, but that allowed us to notify a couple of folks via text from the waiting room. We wanted Connor to tell our parents and he was staying at the Wiggerman's house playing with Berkley, Cooper & Dawson until we were finished.

Dr. Lown said he couldn't be more pleased and was glad I finally gained some weight...what?! I've gained 10 lbs. That is fine with me and honestly, since my fluid levels were so low by the end of my pregnancy with Connor, I'd actually like to gain a few more if that means that my fluid levels are better and safer for this little guy. (I gained 31 with Connor.)

Dr. Lown also mentioned that Metro (where ——— will be born) was overflowing with babies right now. He said all the postpardum rooms were full and they had 4 women pushing! Metro is a smaller hospital and right by our house....seriously, less than 3-4 minutes away. As soon as he was finished with me, we saw him literally run out of the office to go deliver a baby! Fun stuff!

We picked up Connor and told him the good news. He was excited and then something weird happened in the car about 5 minutes later. I'm not sure exactly what it had to do with, but we glanced back and he was very sad and subdued. He just said he didn't want to talk. Okay. Of course as soon as Brian told him that he could pick a special gift for his new baby brother AND one for himself he perked right up.

I wanted to try out a different Italian place for lunch and carbo-loaded and told our parents over lunch. :) Then we went to Meijer to find a toy. Not much luck there but Target had a "Chase" Rescue Bot that Connor selected for himself and we a little aid from us, a "on the go" Gentle Giraffe that plays soothing sounds for his not-yet-born brother.

Now for the honesty part.

I hate crying. I really dislike being "pooly" and yet my eyes are still puffy from a late afternoon of tears. I especially hate crying on a wonderful day that we found out we are having a healthy baby boy! I truly am absolutely ecstatic and so so thankful for the many many blessings we have been given. Throughout my pregnancy when people asked me if I wanted a boy or a girl, I could say with great honesty that I didn't care. That is and was true. Health, especially after knowing many that have experienced children with health problems and scares was and is the most important thing to me.

However, it looks like I've been crying because I'm sad or disappointed. I am NOT. Connor is going to be an adorable big brother and I KNOW that this baby is going to bring us so much happiness and joy....an absolute gift from God.

With that said (and hopefully understood), I spent some time yesterday afternoon relinquishing ideas that have been in my head since I was a little girl. See, we are likely "done" having kiddos after this sweet baby comes along. I'm not going to say anything definitely, but I've always thought that I would only have 2...regardless of sex. I don't believe in having another baby simply to "try" for a specific sex. Perhaps I will want 3 baby boys of my own in the future, but right now I need to see how it is with the 2 that I've been given. :) Anyway, I just needed to shed a few tears about not having tea parties or going to an American Girl store or even watching Annie and other "girly" movies with a daughter of my own. I will likely never plan a wedding or pick out a prom dress or talk about boys, get our nails done, or spend hours coloring at my kitchen table.  All of this is okay. I just needed to shed a few tears embrace my reality. I never think I had my life "planned" and I am not disappointed in what God knows is best for me and my family. I honestly think that at some level, any woman that is "girly" at all (and I am not too extreme on that spectrum) would have feelings like this if given a houseful of boys. I just don't think many people admit it or talk about it. There is a fear that it will be viewed as disappointment. I'm hoping that my honesty is not misunderstood this way. It is not something that I want to talk about, but I likely will get teary again, and as I've said, I really hate crying.

I never ever want this little baby to think that he was "supposed" to be a girl. HE IS NOT! I am so excited and proud of the baby boy that he already is, the boy that he will become, and the man that he will turn into. I am looking forward to being the "queen" of my own castle and will hopefully have 2 boys that adore their mom. :) I am already praying for wonderful daughter-in-laws that most importantly make my boys happy, but hopefully will also embrace their mom and let me do girl stuff with them. However, in the meantime I am really looking forward to being a mom of little boys! Dirt, sports, bugs, boo-boos, super heroes, plaid shorts, crocs, tan little summer bodies and LOTS of energy.

The bottom line is that I think that one of the greatest gifts (in addition to our children of course) is not getting to choose. I find great comfort in knowing that God has given us exactly what we can handle and exactly what our family needs.....a precious baby boy. We really could not be more excited about the newest member of our family and we can't wait to meet him at the end of September!
The shot we got the second she put the wand on my belly!
Precious little face.
he had his arms crossed and near his face a lot
I believe that is a foot....not sure though..
sort of a whole body shot...sort of...can't see much of the legs
hiding from us again
The best "profile" shot we got...little bugger!
By the way, I would expect fathers with a houseful of girls to go through a similar "grieving" process. I'm sure I'm not the only one.... :)
I'm also, SO GLAD we found out his gender now. I'm thankful that we got our surprise yesterday instead of on his birthday. When he is born, I will have already processed everything and will experience pure joy...with a few touches of pain thrown in...that's okay, he's worth it. :)

———

Little buddy, (we'll figure out your name soon, I hope)

I love you so much already and I am so glad that you are going to be our son. You are fearfully and wonderfully made just exactly as you are supposed to be and you are exactly what I wanted! I can't wait to hold you, hug you and shower you with kisses. Your big brother, Connor is so excited and told us yesterday that he wants to teach you how to crawl and play rough with you! He loves you already. I hope that you guys will be wonderful friends and compliment one another with your likenesses and differences. Daddy is so excited to have another little guy in the house and maybe even another golfing buddy! I can only hope that you are as happy that we are your parents as we are that you are our son.

I treasure our time together right now, as I feel you moving around in my belly. As much as I want to meet you, stay in there for another 20 weeks or so to "cook" a little longer. By then, I promise your room will be ready. I'm already having fun deciding how to decorate just with you in mind.

Love you forever,
Mommy

19 weeks! — Bump Progression (1st)

Tomorrow is the big day!

I've been so busy (barely left my office for more than 30 minutes all day), but I promised my mom I would take this picture and post it...

Aren't I large... at least I was smarter this time and actually wore a maternity tank top. The cable knit shirt I wore with Connor was pretty much shot by the end! And no timer this time...too lazy to get out the tripod.

"Facebook official"

The title of this post is super lame, but after getting to hear the beautiful heartbeat of our baby again this morning (with a doppler), I am finally confident enough to announce our news to hundreds of folks via good ol' facebook.

The baby's strong heartbeat was around 145 beats per minute this morning. (Dr. Lown said that anything between 120 and 160 is great.) I am feeling more baby activity, but it is still pretty random and not something that I will freak out about if I don't feel it every day. I will be 15 weeks on Thursday. :) I also felt better today after Lown told me that my chances of losing this baby now are as low as they are going to get for the rest of the pregnancy, so hopefully the paranoia will go down a little bit now.

Good day.

My next appointment will be an appointment/ultrasound combo. It was originally scheduled for the 15th, but B had a conflict, so yay for us....it was bumped up to May 11th! I will be 19 weeks and 1 day. We should find out the gender, but also the overall health of the baby. I remember this being a long appointment with Connor and although he cooperated to let us know he was a boy, some of the other measurements were hard to get. Prayers continue that this little one is healthy and doing great.

Connor seems to think the baby is a girl. I'm not going to lie and seem to be leaning that way myself, but I also thought Connor was a girl....so my mother's intuition is not so great. Connor calls the baby "she" and kisses my tummy on a daily...if not hourly basis. He says, "I want to kiss your baby." Yesterday, I reminded him that it is Daddy's baby too, and Brian chimed in to tell him that it is his baby as well. So, he can kiss "OUR baby". He liked that and told me on the way to school that "she" was his friend. Be still my heart, little buddy.

The picture at the top was taken in our backyard on Easter Sunday: 14 weeks, 3 days pregnant. I will do another post with more Easter pictures.

Toasted Baby Bump

I joked with my neighbor yesterday that if could get a sunburn in MARCH in MICHIGAN, then bring it on. I got a set of logos finished yesterday as well as lingerie shower designs and read a bit on the chaise lounge on our deck in the middle. Since I was in the privacy of my own deck, Connor was at school, and we were having the hottest March day in record-keeping hisory (86º)....I decided to wear a 2-piece suit and get a little sun. As I said, bring it on.

I read a bit of "The Lucky One" by Nicholas Sparks and proceeded to flip every now and then. That was probably my last shot of getting to lay on my stomach. The chaise is a little forgiving, but I was probably pushing it a little bit. I see a bright white backside in my future. How do you prevent that when you are pregnant?!?

Anyway, it felt fabulous to get a little sun. Since I'll only wear a "bikini" on my deck and when no one else is around, my tummy will likely not see the light of day very frequently.

Let's just say it is a little pink. It really isn't bad, but at one point Brian did ask me if I was trying to bake the baby. Not so much. :)

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Tuesday was a great day.

I'm a couple of days late with this post....but I don't really think it matters since they are only being "saved" and not published yet anyway.

Tuesday, March 13th was a great day. We'd been waiting for this day for the last 4 weeks. At my last OB appointment, Dr. Lown told us that the real test would be if the baby's heartbeat was strong enough to be heard with only a doppler.  We've waited and waited to share our wonderful news until the success of this appointment.

Although the doctor said not to panic if we were unable to hear the heartbeat with just the doppler (would do an ultrasound), I'm not a big fan of ultrasounds anymore. I'm batting about 50/50 with those being positive/negative experiences.

Through several weeks or pretty extreme nausea (that I never experienced with Connor) and some very tired days (but not as bad as Connor) the symptoms seemed to get a lot better around week 9.5. Although I was thankful for the relief, it also made me a little nervous. I have been more paranoid than I thought I would be about this pregnancy & baby. I guess that is what a miscarriage will do.

I think the part that messed with my head the most is that last time, I had no reason to think that anything was wrong. In my mind, I was 9 weeks pregnant. I'd known for approximately 5 woeeks and had those 5 weeks to experience pregnancy symptoms and let the excitement grow exponentially on a daily basis. Although my heart was telling me to have faith, my head kept going back to last time.

I guess one of my biggest reassurances this time around is that I am freaking huge.....to not even be in my second trimester. This does make me feel better.

At the appointment, I was calm and optimistic. I even took a leap of faith and went ahead and paid for our portion of the delivery! ($441 that isn't covered by our insurance) Brian was cool and calm too, but after I paid, he did ask me, "what happens if the baby dies?" Obviously the risks are very real for him too.

Once Dr. Lown came in and we chatted for a bit, it was time for the doppler. That was a really really long 30-45 seconds. It took him a while hunting around, but then we heard the most beautiful sound. My eyes lit up and filled with tears. 160 beats per minute. He let us listen for a little while. What a little miracle. Although Lown continued to say that he will feel much better after the end of the month, he also said that he is not worried about us or this baby at all. The 7 week ultrasound had the baby's heartbeat at 137 bpm. He told us on Tuesday that typically babies that have a heartbeat stronger than 120 beats per minute are able to sustain life and develop normally. With 160 bpm today we feel wonderful and are willing to share our news.

Although I felt a little foolish for even asking. I did ask Dr. Lown if it was even biologically possible for me to be able to feel the baby move. I only asked because on Monday night, I swear I felt him/her. It was a tiny flutter, but it was real and that was the first thing that popped into my head. But at only 10 weeks at 4 days how is it even possible. Dr. Lown said with a second baby and since I am rather "thin" he is quite confident that I did feel the baby. But asked me NOT to freak out if I don't feel it on a daily basis. No problem. That was just another little answered prayer....a little reassurance just when I needed it.

We are "telling" but since Connor and I are going "home" on the 24th and I am going to see a bunch of my college buddies in person, I want to save this little surprise. Our wonderful news will become offically facebook public after that.

The timing has also been wonderful because after a truly bizarre winter, we have bypassed spring. The temperatures were in the 80s on Wednesday...March 14th! Up to this point, I've been able to "hide" my growing bump beneath coats and jackets. Not after Wednesday. I had on as little clothing as possible and was thrilled to get a bit of a slight sunburn while Connor played outside with tons of neighborhood kiddos.

Fun times ahead. :)

Our First Look.

A most beautiful sight.
(I thought we were supposed to be able to hear it too, but I can't...)

Our little miracle at 7 weeks.

The sonogram pictures aren't great. I think this is for 2 reasons. 1) This was primarily a reassurance ultrasound after our miscarriage. The only real point was to hear a strong heartbeat, so it is way early. My first ultrasound with Connor was at 9 weeks. 2 weeks makes a big difference in a fetus. 2) She only used the wand on top of my belly, so that is why I think they are less clear and a bit blurry. But that is okay we got to see and hear what we so desperately wanted to see.

Perhaps these two pictures from babycenter.com will help a bit.

The baby is about the size of a blueberry.
Arms & legs look more like paddles and there is still a definite tail.

1st appointment

I had my first doctor's appointment for our little peanut. According to my calculations, I should be 6 weeks, 5 days. I did bloodwork a couple weeks ago. Connor actually LOVED that....referencing for days that the hospital took all of mommy's blood. Not, "all" of it, kiddo. :)

Anyway.

My results came back and all of my hormone levels looked GREAT! I was specifically concerned with the progesterone level (one they did NOT check in August/September before the miscarriage).

Today, Dr. Lown told me that just based on my levels alone that my risk of another miscarriage drops from 30% down to 10%. (YAY!) Since Dr. L is one of Brian's doctors, we have a little more than the normal doctor/patient relationship. He came in and gave me a big hug of congratulations and then asked how I was feeling.

I answered honestly, "Nauseous & exhausted." He said that was WONDERFUL. I realize that it is a good sign for the growth of the baby which is ultimately all that matters to me, but this whole nausea thing is new to me. I didn't have much of it with Connor and I definitely never threw up. I threw up this morning... The worst nausea yet set in at about 12:30 am and I wish I had forced myself to throw up then...perhaps I would have felt better. Instead, I just sucked it up and remained essentially awake until 6:00 when the nausea was so extreme (for me) that I did throw up. After brushing my teeth I went to sleep for 2 more hours.

Connor was late for school.

Dr. Lown also said that just based on feeling my uterus, he said it felt like I was about 8 weeks. That is obviously ahead of what the calendar is saying, but we'll find out for sure when I go in for the first ultrasound in 2 DAYS! Thursday, 11:15 am. I feel really good about this pregnancy....but I thought that last time too. However, I guess the nausea does make me "feel" a little better....while also making me feel a ton worse. I just can't wait to hear that little heartbeat....

our baby story

It has been a long 2+ years. While we have enjoyed [almost] every second of it with our little man, Connor, that is also how long we have been trying to add to our family. The struggle was a big surprise as it took no effort at all to get pregnant with Connor. I will not go into our full story, but the bottom line is that both Brian and I have "issues". It was after a year of monthly disappointment that we found this out. It was devastating. Connor was/is a miracle child and the chances of us having another baby on our own was about 2%.
Really? What happened? How could a couple go from getting pregnant without even trying to being essentially infertile?! What do we do now? What steps are we willing to take to have another baby?

Without going into many details, I clung to a promise that God gave me in high school for being obedient. "Your childREN will be greatly blessed." Although I have a solid relationship with God and I believe he "speaks" to us all in different ways, I have never been more confident of a direct promise that was given to me. It was not an audible sound, it might as well have been. At 17, I knew I wanted to be a mother and that is all I needed to hear to remain obedient to His plan.

You have no idea how much I have clung to those words in the last 26 months. I honestly never doubted that there would be another baby....I just had no idea when it would be. Brian and I always just assumed that we would have children about 2 years apart. That was OUR plan. For the first time in my life, my plan and God's plan for me/us have not been in alignment. It was a pretty tough pill to swallow. All I could do was cling to His promise to me. Of course there were tough days filled with doubt and thinking about how much we wanted Connor to experience being a big brother and to have a sibling throughout life.

Then there is the struggle of fertility assistance. How far should we go? I wasn't keen on IVF. I feel that it is a wonderful tool for some people, but we just weren't at that point. However, the doctors told us that it might be the only way. Seriously? How could they say that while I was holding living proof that we COULD have a baby on our own. It is called "secondary infertility" and is way more common than you would think. We are not alone. I assumed, as many others do that if you have one baby, then you could have 5 if you wanted. This is not the case. There is not a specific medical cause, it just happens. At the fertility center that we went to in Grand Rapids, 25% of the patients already have a child. I will never look at an only child the same way again. I always just thought it was because the parents only wanted one....

We decided that I would take an ovulation boosting medicine (Femara) and we would do an IUI (intrauterine insemination). We did this for 2 months. Didn't work. On the second one, I just knew it wasn't going to work before I even left the office. From an optimist, that is saying a lot. We took a break. I had one dose of Femara left and I just held onto it. The doctors told us that the next step for us would be for me to take a lot more hormones and try it again. I wasn't ready for that. (This is all in the late winter/spring of 2011.)

Without the medicine, my body/cycle was very unpredictable. Although a weird thing to pray, I asked God to tell me when to take my last dose. My "sign" was a 42 day cycle in June. I took my last dose of Femara the following month.

To my amazement and absolute delight, about 23 days into the next cycle, I just knew I was pregnant. I was so confident and yet terrified to take a test. (I even bought Connor a "Big Brother" shirt.) Sure enough, that super early morning test when I was only 2 days "late" confirmed what I already knew....I was pregnant! With tears streaming down my face, I crawled back into bed to tell Brian the good news. What a wonderful day.

I popped out in a hurry, and the pregnancy insomnia was almost immediate. (I had completely forgotten about that part from when I was pregnant with Connor.) I felt good, and I was ecstatic. We were going to be seeing both of our families in person soon, so we wanted to be strong and wait to tell them ourselves. I was about 7+ weeks along when my parents found out and about 8+ when Brian's parents found out. What an incredibly tough secret to keep, but it was also very fun getting to do it in person. As I said, I felt good and I couldn't believe how much my belly had already popped out. I've heard you "show" faster with the second baby, but sheesh! We were so excited about our ultrasound at 9 weeks.

That day was not so fun. It was a Thursday. In my mind I was exactly nine weeks. As soon as the wand was placed on my belly, I knew it wasn't good. I vividly remember what my early ultrasound was like with Connor and about how big he was (the pictures is actually still hanging in his room). This baby did not look like that. There was actually a struggle to find anything at all. And then she found it. It was tiny. Measuring at a little less than 6 weeks. She continued to look around and then we heard, "there's another one". Oh my goodness....TWINS! However, I couldn't get passed the knot in my stomach about the size of the baby. Although I hate it, my first thought when I heard there were 2 was "maybe this one will be bigger". I was very confident of my "dates" and these just did not match up. The ultrasound technician left the room. Of course I had tears streaming down my face. I was trying to be hopeful, but I already knew. These little ones weren't going to make it. Why?! Why would God torture me like this?! I had no signs that anything was wrong and I just knew that these babies were such a God-thing....why would he take them away? Especially after wanting them for so long?! Thursday was the hardest. I didn't want to talk to anyone. I wrote out a message to those that knew I was pregnant asking for prayers and filling them in on what was going on. I couldn't talk without crying, so I just didn't talk. However, I was still Connor's mom and I didn't want to scare him or make him worry. THANK GOD for our little miracle baby. His hugs and kisses sure did make me feel better during that incredibly difficult time. My follow-up ultrasound confirmed what we already knew and I had to induce the miscarriage with medicine to speed the process up (early September). Although not a fun experience at all, I was glad I didn't have to have a D&C.

Each day that went by, my body and my heart healed. We were also given some "good" news that I clung to. My OBGYN told us that they aren't sure why, but that the pregnancy rate following a miscarriage is significantly higher than normal....regardless of a woman's history. Good. We hoped to be back in his office very soon. I still don't pretend to understand God's will and I don't pretend to like it, but deep down, I know He is in control of our best interests. That, I accept and hold dear even when it doesn't make any sense to me.

3 months went by. No luck. I really wanted to get pregnant "on our own"....without any medicine. Although the miscarriage was devastating, we learned 2 things. We didn't HAVE to go to the fertility center to get pregnant and we were indeed still capable of making a baby....even if the chances are super slim. I was impatient and asked for another dose of Femara (this time from my normal OB). I took it. It didn't work. I have no definitive reason why, but I just didn't get the next month's refill filled. I honestly can't tell you why. Looking back I think it was partial laziness and partially I just wanted to see if my body was all out of whack again like it was pre-miscarriage.

It is not. :)

Day 28 was on Thursday. Of course this only matters if my cycle was actually "regular". I hate day 28. Until day 28, 29, 30, I am extremely hopeful. Maybe this will be the month?? Then, just as it has happened for so many months in the last 26, I start. Both ways are devastating, but I just don't take pregnancy tests. I would rather "start" on my own than look at a negative pregnancy test. Brian doesn't really understand this philosophy. I just don't like giving up the hope I have for that month. I swore I wouldn't take a test until I was a whole week late....especially if I hadn't taken any medicine.

Brian went to Arizona to see his brother on Friday. I still hadn't started. He asked me when I was going to take a test. I told him Sunday....even this was earlier than a normal plan for me. I had a lot of "signs" that I was going to start at any moment. But I never did. Some neighborhood friends were planning on coming over for a craft night at my house that night. This usually involves a lot of crafting and enjoying some good wine as well. The girls were coming over at 7:00. At about 5:30, I started to panic a little bit and decided on a whim that I would take a test. I didn't want to drink irresponsibly if I actually WAS pregnant. And if it was negative, I could get wasted....well, that wouldn't be responsible (and not my style) but you know what I mean. I took the test. And left the bathroom. I got Connor in his jammies and we picked up all of his cars. This is seriously the first time that I have not stood over the test to watch it work.

I went back into the bathroom to see.
Oh my goodness. Pure elation.  I ran back into the living room/kitchen (can't remember) and I scooped Connor up. My eyes were weepy and he asked me if I was okay. I told him I was great and SO HAPPY. He proceeded to run around in my delight as well. I did not tell him exactly what I was so happy about, but he didn't care. He was just happy to be happy! A few minutes later, we sat down together in the middle of the kitchen floor and prayed. We always pray together before bed, but this was special. I thanked God for miracles and asked for protection and growth. Dear God, PLEASE let this one "stick".

I called Brian knowing that he was still in mid-air on the way to Arizona. I sent him a text, "Call Me."

Several days prior to this, Brian found and consumed a stash of Valentine M&Ms that I bought to display in a canister. He ate WAY more than I wanted him to and I was beyond irritated. I have gotten mad at this sort of thing before, but even more my my reaction was a bit extreme.
I just couldn't wait to tell him. Text message is pretty impersonal, but I wanted to tell him in some sort of "cute" way without just saying "it is positive". So, I wrote him a text...."Now you know not to take a pregnant girl's portion of chocolate."

He got it. Super excited. He sat in front of Screech (Dustin Diamond) on the plane, got this awesome news, got to meet Grady Sizemore and hung out with his brother in Arizona.....pretty much one of the best weekends ever for him. :)

I called the doctor's office on Monday and am scheduled for my first appointment on Valentine's Day. I should be 2 days shy of 7 weeks at that point. They called in prescription prenatal vitamins for me and I need to stop by the hospital today to do bloodwork. I have done all of these things before. There is a fine line between being super optimistic and also very cautious. I'm very hopeful because we got pregnant all on our own....no medical intervention whatsoever. Maybe my body couldn't handle twins (much more likely when taking a medicine like Femara or Clomid) or maybe it didn't make enough hormone by itself if I took the meds? Who knows. I don't really care. I just hope and pray that this one "sticks"....that this is the baby that God chose just for us and chose us to be his/her parents.

Because we are being so cautious, we are only telling immediate family. Our parents and siblings know our fabulous news. (And I told my friends that came over on Friday.....because I was so excited and because I am going out on a Girl's Night Out this Saturday and I am going to need their help hiding/faking the fact that I will not be drinking. In my hood, if I don't drink anything, they will KNOW for sure. I am not a lush at all....but that is just a sure give away.) The other day, I went ahead and put some of the week markers into my calendar. It just so happens that my week marker is on a Thursday, just like it was back in August. As I put in the first few weeks in the calendar. It came to my attention that on what would have been my due date, March 29, I hope to be 13 weeks pregnant. My hope and prayer is that this day will be bittersweet: bitter because I mourn the loss of the twin babies that were not meant to be, and super sweet because I will be far enough along with this sweet bundle that it is "safe" to shout our wonderful news from the rooftops.

The insomnia is back in full force, but other than that, I feel really good. I hate to say it, but I'm actually hoping for some symptoms just so I know that everything is okay and that the little one is doing good....

A wonderfully fabulous surprise.

January 28, 2012.
4 weeks, 1 day.

I only took a test at all because I had friends coming over for craft night and didn't want to drink irresponsibly. :)

I'm quite certain that Connor does not know what he is holding or what it means. I did not use the word "baby" or "brother". He was simply ecstatic because I was so happy. We ran around the kitchen doing a dance of joy and sat on the floor and thanked God for big miracles.

We anxiously awaited Brian to land in Arizona visiting Scott so I could share the wonderful news.
