"Ticket" to Connor's Party

I literally dreamed up most of the ideas for Connor's birthday party. These "ticket" invitations fall into that category as well. I only mailed out a few and hand delivered to folks in the neighborhood, so please don't be offended if you didn't get one. Consider yourself invited. Anyone that wants to come to Michigan for a birthday party, we'll make room for ya!

How Old is Connor?...........ONE!

Sometimes it seems like Connor has always been a part of our lives, and yet at other times it seems like he was just born yesterday. Regardless, it is tough to believe we have a ONE year old!

Like many munchkins, Connor is having 2 parties to celebrate his first year. The first party was on his actual birthday (the 22nd) and it was at Grandma and Grandpa Nealon's house in Avon Lake. Leslie really outdid her self with a baseball theme & tons of food (pulled pork sandwiches, sweet corn on the cob, chinese salad, watermelon, chicken salad wraps, potato salad and cake). In attendance (no particular order): Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Chris, Cari, Aunt Jill, Akya (Jill's exchange student for the year!!!), Mary, Ed, Great Aunt Jamie, Katie, Great Grandma Kronz, Griffiths family (Courtney, Jeremy, & Joey), Kellie Kraven, and Matt Hagedorn. Uncle Scott had football practice, but Connor insisted on staying up until he got home.

There are videos at the bottom of us singing. He did really well with his very own smash cake and enjoyed it a great deal until the icing got in his eyes. I have no desire to find out what that feels like. He was great after a quick bath and ready to open presents!

Connor and 3 year old, Joey playing!

I really think Connor knew it was a special day just for him. Brian and I gave him a big ball pit with tunnels and two extra little houses. Grandma and Grandpa gave him a Cozy Coupe police car (he got to open it early in Michigan) and his very own "Cars" chair. Pat said that when Leslie brought it home he made a comment, "Like he'll ever sit in that." Well, he LOVED it. As soon as he sat in it he started kicking his legs and proceeded to watch at least 30 minutes of his Elmo DVD also given to him by Grandma & Grandpa Nealon.Cari helping Connor open his present!

Other presents: a hippo shape sorter ("hurling hippo") from Chris and Cari. Workbench and book from Aunt Jill. Squeaky shoes and money from Mary. Amazon.com gift card from Aunt Jamie, Cara & Katie. Soft Tonka truck from Ed. Bee Bop Band with instruments from Kellie. 3 great board books from the Griffiths'. Three trucks from Nana & MonteD (my parents). A push/ride on truck from Great Grandma Kronz. And very special slippers all the way from Kazakhstan from Akya!

Connor with Grandma Kronz' walker. That and her oxygen tank were a big hit with him!

Aunt Kathy came over on Sunday to see the birthday boy and gave him a super-cute gear set.

He loves ALL of his presents and thanks everyone SO MUCH. I will say that the gift keeping his attention the most so far is the mylar balloons that were tied to his chair! :)

Thank you to everyone who made his party a success. Thanks for the great memories!

This is the same video twice. The Facebook version is much better quality, but I don't know if non-facebook people are able to view it....chime in and let me know. :)

Trip to Traverse City

Brian has been doing a lot of work up in Traverse City, Michigan recently and this past weekend, Connor and I joined him for a little family vacation. (He was "on-call" but didn't have to work, YAY!)

Connor and I got up there Thursday evening. Brian worked all day Friday while I did my best to entertain Connor in our hotel room, at the mall, and in the pool. We even spent over half and hour walking up and down the halls of the hotel (I took his little push-walker with us).

Saturday was the eventful day. We found the only orchard in the area still doing "u-pick" cherries. Mid-August is VERY late to still be picking, but Rennie's still had a ton of cherries. We picked the dark, sweet ones. I was shocked at how dark they really were....basically a very dark purple. We didn't actually pick that many, but could have. It was just tough to be toting a munchkin at the same time. Connor LOVED the cherries. Brian and I would bite the cherry in half, taking the pit for ourselves and then give him the other half. This worked most of the time until Connor picked them for himself and stuck the whole thing in his mouth! We tried to fish the pit out of his mouth, but the little guy just sucked it right down. So, he took in at least 3! (oops) The only bad thing about cherries is that the juice stains so bad. Thank goodness Connor had a bib, but I will still be stain-treating his outfit and Brian's shirt. :) Overall, it was a lot of fun. I know Connor is a little young, but still a great experience. It will be fun to do it again when he gets older.

We ate a little Burger King lunch after cherry picking and changed into our beach wear, then headed to the Bay...the Grand Traverse Bay to be exact. There are obviously beaches all along the coast and it really looks like Caribbean waters with sailboats sprinkled along the water. If I hadn't been there myself, I never would have believed I was in Michigan! We got to the beach and hauled all our stuff out onto the sand. Connor was so excited and couldn't get to the water fast enough. People were amazed that he was completely unphased by the chilly water....Brian said it was probably in the 50s or 60s (so you know I'm not exaggerating :)). He was just crawling along the shoreline, letting mom and dad chase after him. Brian swam out further and took Connor with him. I got in, but never went under. I just couldn't get passed some of the sensitive water temperature spots on my body. He swam and swam, with the ducks and everything. :) Then he crawled all over the beach, inspecting every little thing he came across, but actually didn't put anything in his mouth. He is going through a cute little stage of "sharing" with us....food, twigs, grass, sand, etc. So he'd crawl along and then hand me whatever crossed his path.

After all this cherry picking and beach fun (notice I never said anything about a nap), we knew he was going to be zonked out. He fell asleep in the car before we'd even finished loading it up with all of our beach stuff. I carefully carried him into the hotel and he woke up when we were in the lobby. By the time we got to the room, it was circus time again. We couldn't believe it. This child doesn't sleep!!! Brian and I were both laying down on the bed with our eyes closed trying to lead by example, but he pretty much thought that was funny. At 4:45 I gave in and suggested going to an early dinner so maybe we wouldn't have to wait so long.

Off to Apache Trout. The earlier dinner did work like a charm. We waited less than half and hour (compared to two hours like we were quoted the night before) and we just enjoyed a drink at the tiki bar on the water and watched the swan, ducks and all the boats. Again, Connor wanted to crawl everywhere, but was very good at dinner.

After dinner we needed to pick up some cherry wine for a few people and I needed to taste some of the famous fudge. The downtown area is very cute and has all things cherry. We got wine from the Cherry Stop (festival wine) and The Cherry Republic. We ended up with 7 bottles and next time I want to get a sampler of all the cherry sodas. Considering I'm not a big cherry-flavored girl, I really like the real stuff. :)

We can't believe that Connor was still awake...and happy. He finally crashed at about 8:45 after having a total of 30 minutes of napping the whole day: 15 minutes on the way to the orchard and 15 minutes coming back to the hotel from the beach. And then he proceeded to wake up about 5 times, ending up in bed with us (still waking up). I thought his bad sleeping was just because we were in a strange place and the hotel was all out of cribs/pack 'n plays, so he was just in his little tent. However, on Saturday Brian spotted another reason....he's getting his 2 top teeth! The left one has broken through completely and the right one is well on its way. No wonder he's been drooling up a storm! :)

Anyway, Sunday was pretty low-key. We drove up further north into the peninsula and met up with one of Brian's doctors at Metro (right down the street from our house in B.C.) for lunch. He and his family have a cottage up north and invited us to lunch and to check out the cottage. I didn't know it was another 45 minutes north, but Connor slept in the car and it was a beautiful drive. We even crossed the 45th parallel. We were closer to the NORTH POLE than the equator! Lunch was at a little hole-in-the-wall place called "The Eat Spot" and their cottage was a very cute, quaint place. It was nice to meet Dr. Lown, his wife, and 3 daughters too. I asked what it looked like in the winter, and the oldest daughter, Marissa quickly chimed in and said it looked like Antarctica! Their cottage is on the Bay, but only about 300 yards from where the bay meets Lake Michigan. It was really beautiful, but I can just imagine what it looks like all covered in snow! I was pretty much exhausted from chasing Connor around trying to make sure he didn't get into anything he shouldn't. I gave up and let him crawl in the water (in this diaper). Crawling over all the Zebra Mussel shells didn't bother him at all. At times like those I am SO glad he doesn't put everything in his mouth!

Anyway, Brian drove us back to the hotel, I jumped into the driver's seat and Connor and I headed back home. Brian is still working up there, but I had some things I needed to do at home and honestly it is just so much easier taking care of a baby at home. Although we miss Brian dearly, I think Connor was glad to be back in his bed. :)

B will be back home tomorrow!

(I'll add pictures soon. Munchkin is talking to himself [or to his animals???] in his bed. I'll grab him before he gets upset.)

VIDEOS!

I just discovered that I can embed videos from Facebook!!! It is MUCH faster and it allows me to add longer videos and not worry about going over the space limits set by blogspot!

Anyway, this was about 2 months ago when my mom was in town. :)

Connor's First Haircut!

The time had come....we couldn't put it off any longer.....Connor needed a HAIRCUT!

He's had his moments of "rooster hair" since he was about 3.5 months old. You can imagine how much it has grown since then and it started hanging over his ears. This afternoon, we were all in town and had a few minutes to experience this milestone event with our little BOY....not a baby any more.

We went to Snip-its. It is about 20 minutes away, but we were willing to drive/pay for the first haircut experience. Besides, I was a little nervous about how we were going to get him to sit still for that long....especially because there would be blades around his head! I figured, they knew what they were doing at a place just for kids.

Connor sat in the big boy chair and didn't even need a booster! It had a seat belt to hold him in, then Jessica brought out the secret weapon....a lollipop! As she was unwrapping it, I immediately didn't want to be "that mom" that says her kid can't have a sucker....I just thought he was a little young. He's never had any candy and aren't there "rules" about giving kids small hard candy, especially with sticks??? Well, I got over it and never said a word. Let me tell you...it worked like a charm! I guess he'll get his special lollipops whenever he gets his hair cut!
As you can see, it had gotten so long. I swear the top was about 5-6 inches.

He was really still the whole time and I was even shocked at how he left her alone and didn't try to grab her arms too much. Whenever I brush his hair, he's always trying to grab the brush out of my hand.

I also think it is hilarious that he has a death grip on the sucker!! He did get a little nervous when she brought out the electric trimmers to clean up his little neck and around his ears. (notice the tucked thumb)

Jessica did an amazing job. She even used a little spray mousse. Their special mousse dries without looking wet and you can't even tell it is there....she said when he gets to be school-age it greatly reduces the risk of head lice...interesting. To top it all off, she blew off the lose hair with the hairdryer and basically covered him in baby powder and he STILL didn't get upset. (I've traumatized him enough using the hair dryer on myself while he's in the bathroom)

The event was topped off with a prize. He's a little too small to really understand what was going on with the prize machine until it turned on and spit out a little cup with 2 stickers!

Overall, it was a very successful outing. Connor got a great little haircut and turned into a toddler and mommy didn't cry in public! :) I'm glad we got a family picture with our little boy.
I am just now realizing that our "Tiny Guy" nickname for him is becoming more and more inappropriate. It is hard to believe how much he has grown in a year....11 days until his first birthay!

Crawling with Mom (from B's phone)

Brian took this a while ago on his phone. Connor gets a big kick out of it when we crawl with him. He wants you to follow him and will look back to check. The end is the best part when he finishes up our crawling time with a love bite on my face. :)

Today

I know the title of this post stinks. Sorry about that, it is a combination of randomness that happened today, so that's it.

I should be sleeping or cleaning...oh well.

Connor and I should actually be in Traverse City with Brian, but I'm not there either.

First, I will say that Connor only had one nap again today, but it was not a good thing and I tried to get him to take a nap many more times. He had a HORRIBLE night last night. I'm quite certain it was because he couldn't breathe. He was all congested and snotty. Needless to say, that continued all day today and I was constantly wiping double snot rockets from his little face (from sneezes). I finally got his nose cleared out enough for him to sleep for almost 2 hours in the swing in the living room. (Yes, I got it out of the basement storage area...he hasn't been interested in long time, but it worked today!) I also ventured out to Walgreens in search of a Neti Pot for babies, but didn't find it. I got a "SinuCleanse". Maybe that is the same thing, just a version for an infant....whatever, this is what I got. I swear it looks like some sort of a contraption for some serious illegal drugs (not that I would have any idea what that looks like). It did seem to open him up a little more, and I mainly mean that a bunch of gunk came out. The advantage is that I don't have to tilt his head back like with the drops/spray because of the nifty little arm thingy, but I still have to hold his arms down and brace his little head against me. I watched a few videos of adults using a real Neti Pot and several people said it felt like they were drowning. I think Connor might agree, he was NOT a fan, but didn't pitch any more of a fit than normal when liquid goes up your nose. Anyway, he is asleep now and I'm hoping for a better night. If he feels better, we might go meet Brian tomorrow in northern Michigan. He is up there for work all week and "on-call" this weekend and next. Yuck.

———

I am SO EXCITED that after much "practice" Connor successfully got off the fireplace by himself tonight! He has been climbing up there on a regular basis for the last few days and it has been a nightmare because I can't leave him anywhere without fear that he is going to fall off! He has only fallen off once (on his head no-less...thank you, God for making kids durable!), but that is still awful. It just happens so fast! Anyway, tonight, he finally put it together. It took a lot for me not to rush over an make sure he didn't fall...but I had to be the camera-lady, and sometimes I just get to the point that he's going to have to suffer logical consequences. (Is that cruel when he is only 11 months old???)

Here is my video evidence:

Oh, you should probably know that previously he thought he could get down from anything if he crouched down far enough....not good, I know. My favorite part is at the end when he gets all excited and cheers...and then gets right back up. Also, please pardon my disaster of a house. The laundry all over the floor has since been folded and put away.

———

I am an idiot. I know this is not news to some of you, but I HATE it when I learn something way after the fact. I have been doing some internet searching tonight for Connor's upcoming birthday and somehow started thinking about the shopping basket that I wanted to get with our stroller (it wasn't availabe in America last July), so I looked for it and that led me to videos about our stroller itself.

I really like our Mutsy stroller. My main complaints about it are that it is not lightweight...in fact, it is pretty heavy, there are no cupholders, and (I guess the main thing) it doesn't recline. Well, it is still heavy and cupholders didn't magically appear, but it DOES recline and the seat even flips around....SO FREAKIN' COOL. I've always thought that it was supposed to recline, but I tried and tried and couldn't figure it out. Well, I obviously didn't try hard enough for that or to get the seat reversed. I am so glad I know everything it does now. I feel awful that Connor hasn't gotten to enjoy all of the benefits just because his mom is an idiot. At least he's not 2 already, right? I guess we'll just have to have another kid. :) I do think I'll make a call tomorrow about the shopping basket and see if the guy will give me a good deal like he did last year.....

Oh, and I swear the videos are new....there was NOT visual explanation when we got it a year ago. I guess that is what I get for not reading the manual....

Cheesy Mutsy Video

Goodnight.
